Adidas Predator X Review

The Adidas Predator series has been the power boot king ever since its release in 1994.  The tenth incarnation of this legendary cleat has quite a large bar to reach. With the Predator X, Adidas has surpassed all previous versions, and have created a cleat for the ages.

For the first time Adidas has dropped the covered lacing and instead now offer side lacing to create a larger striking surface.  The previous Predator, the Powerswerve, was popular for its Powerswerve element. This was a series of liquid rubber strips on the upper which provided immense swerve and control.  Now building off this success, Adidas has covered the entire striking area of the Predator X with a rubber silicon compound (above).  This surface provides new levels of grip and swerve. Because it covers more of the striking area than the old Powerswerve elements did, it is far more effective.

Another standout feature of the Predator Powerswerve was the Powerpulse, a chamber on the bottom of the shoe filled with tungsten powder. This chamber allowed your foot to carry more momentum forward, boosting the power of your kicks. On the new Predator X, the Powerpulse has been replaced with the Powerspine.  Through extensive testing, Adidas has found that the new Powerspine allows for zero loss of power from your foot to the ball.  In addition to all of this, Adidas has developed a completely new material for the rest of the cleat.  The Taurus leather combines the comfort and touch of kangaroo leather with the durability of a synthetic material.

Adidas initially released the Predator X in the classic predator colors of Black/White/Red (top of post) , but also the distinct White/Dark Brown/Pure Yellow (above). The legendary Predator wearer, David Beckham, has his own colorway of the Predator X (bottom left). Also, in conjunction with the Champions League, Adidas released the Champions League version,  Real Blue/Running White/Light Scarlet (bottom right).

With all these amazing new technologies, its no wonder the Predator X is worn by such legends as David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Michael Ballack, Robin Van Persie, and Raul, and that it was designed with input from Zinedine Zidane.

I recently purchased the Predator X’s and am having a hard time breaking them in. They are causing blisters all over my feet. The top of both pinky toes and on my outside heel in particular. Both spots are directly caused by the synthetic parts of the boot. The edge of the plastic heel and where the plastic ends for the three stripes. I’m hoping they will break in soon as I’ve only worn them for about an hour and a half until now…mainly because I can’t wear them for more than half an hour at a time due to the blistering.

Having said that, I hope they break in well because the Powerspine is definitely not a gimmick. I find that even when I don’t hit the ball flush I get more power on my shots. Also, the swerve I get when crossing and shooting is more pronounced wearing these cleats.

I hope this review is helpful for you guys, I will post another one after getting a few hows in them and let you know if they break in.

    Hey -

Thanks so much for leaving a great comment! I definitely agree that the Predator X´s take a while to break in, but once they do, they are definitely worth it. I would suggest trying to wear them around the house for awhile without doing anything strenuous in them. That should help with the discomfort. And yes, the powerspine is a great addition.

    Looking forward to another review!

Well, I’ve spent some more time breaking them in and it has gotten better. I’ve been doing some juggling and taking shots so as to not exert too much friction while wearing them. The leather has loosened somewhat however they are still causing blisters. I think they will be okay over time, it’s just taking a lot longer than expected. I have spent about 3 hours in them now. Most of my other cleats have been broken in by now, oh well!

  4. Humidors July 16, 2010 at 2:39 pm #

Okay, I decided break in time was over and wore them in a game last night. I taped up the parts of my feet most prone to blister just in case and it worked well.

Again, I have to reiterate how impressed I am with the performance of these boots. I’m getting more power on my shots, which I’m attributing to the Powerspine and control is great. I find the ball sticks to my feet much better with these compared to my previous cleats.

I’m not 100% about the fit because I am still blistering but I do think after a couple more hours they should be fine. There has already been a big improvement since I got them.

    Hey -

Thanks so much for the great comments! Getting this extra input is really helpful to us. That’s too bad about to continued blistering, but like you said, I’m sure it’ll fade. And in my opinion, it’s completely worth it since the cleats are so great. Just use some bandages or a wrap to keep your feet from blistering, and you’ll be scoring from all over the place!

  7. Andy July 25, 2010 at 6:23 pm #

    Hola Eduardo -

¡Lo siento, no soy lo mejor hispanohablante! Pero si, tienes razon. Hay limadura de silicio que le da al botin mas balance y equilibrio. Tambien añade un poco mas poder cuando se tira la pelota. Gracias por el comentario!

For those who don’t speak Spanish, I think a translation is in order! Eduardo asked if there’s a bubble in the bottom of Predator TRX cleats that helps with balance. I answered that yes, there’s a bubble of filings of silicon that help with balance and add some power to your shots.

I had serious problems with blistering until I noticed the extra little lace hole on the outside of the boot. I realized I wasn’t lacing them up completely so I wasn’t getting the proper fit. Once I laced them up the right way the fit was much better and I didn’t have any problems with the blistering. If anyone else is having problems with blistering make sure they are laced up all the way.

  9. Andy September 23, 2010 at 7:52 pm #

Great point Zack! Thanks so much for mentioning that. Lots of people don’t use the topmost hole for their laces, and it almost always results in blistering.

    Thanks for the comment!

Are there any sizing issues? If I’m a 10.5, should I get an 11? Do they run true to size?

  11. Andy September 28, 2010 at 6:06 pm #

    Hi Ben -

They run pretty much true to size. If you’re at the top end of a 10.5, I’d get an 11, but otherwise you should be good.

    Thanks!

looking at buying a piar of these. wondering about the quality. 2-3 reviews on soccer.com said the sole sperated from the upper after one game. anyone else heard of this? thanks!

  13. Andy November 15, 2010 at 5:47 pm #

    Hi Martin -

That sounds like a pretty isolated occurence, I wouldn’t worry about it. Definitely go for them if you like them. And on the off chance that it does happen, Adidas should send you a replacement pair – they’re usually very good about that.

    Thanks for the comment!

    Hi
can you tell me the differences between the absolion X TRX FG and the Asolado X FG boots please

  15. Andy February 19, 2011 at 2:03 pm #

    Tania –

The Absolion is the better vesion of the Absolado. The main difference is that the Absolion has a much better striking area, which gives you more accurate shots and passes.

    Thanks for the comment!

It’s been about 8-9 months since I bought these cleats so here’s my final verdict:

All blistering issues stopped after about 5-6 hours of wearing them. Powerspine is fantastic. Control is great. I’ve been playing indoor on artificial turf for the last 5 months. I find the actual cleats a little bit too deep for the turf that I am playing on (never had this issue with my other outdoor boots) but overall it’s still okay.

In conclusion, I’m very pleased with these boots. I also have had no problems in terms of construction, although I have only been playing once a week all winter rather than my normal 2/week routine.

Thanks so much for updating us again! It’s really nice to have somebody like you to testify to what we said in the article!

I really appreciate the comments, and thanks again!

Everyone complaining of blisters, you probably dont have the right size, plain and simple. Mine fit me perfectly snug (which when buying boots, is something that you want so that your feet dont slide around and develop hot spots/blisters), I trained with them hard in practice the first day they arrived and played a full 80 minute match in them the following day, not one hot spot, zero blisters to speak of.

Now, being an avid fan of Puma boots, coming from the King series, wearing these was one heck of an adjustment. I didnt notice a change in the power in my shot (I doubt a boot will add “noticeable” speed), but I do appreciate the grip on the instep, it made settling the ball much easier. I’m also the corner/free kick taker on the team and I really, REEEEALLY, had to adjust my shot angles because the ball bends hard and the way I hit the ball, dips significantly, whereas before in the Pumas, taking a corner, i’d aim for the top of the box, that way the ball would bend into or around the 8-10 yard area. Now i’m finding myself having to aim somewhere between the 18 and mid field to get the ball in the same spot.

The nice thing about that is that the ball dips quickly and hard, making it difficult for defenders to head the ball clear. I cant say enough about these boots, aside from my last Puma KSL’s, these are probably the best boots i’ve owned.

I’m thinking about buying Predators this Summer when I’m going to UK, from Bangladesh. Do you think I should buy them? What do you think the price is going to be? Does power with Predators really increase? (just curious)

  21. Joshua April 16, 2011 at 12:19 pm #

I’ve worn Pred’s for about 6 years now and these X’s are my favorite ones so far. I’ve had them for about 7 months now. I had the Powerswerves with the tungsten powder and those killed my feet. I bumped up half a size on the X’s and they’re slightly too big. I wish they made a 12.25 size. The powder in the Powerswerves really seemed more like a gimmick to me than anything and when you just lightly jog around it feels like your shoes are untied as the sand slides back and forth, but when you’re actually playing you don’t notice it at all. I’m sure people will disagree, but I think a lot that goes into making one cleat better than another is just personal bias. If you think the cleat will make you better, you will probably have more confidence and thus play better as a result. Just my two cents. Nonetheless, these cleats are amazing and I definitely love them. I have the soft ground version and the grip is amazing. Be careful as they will tear up the field quite a bit. So don’t play anywhere you don’t plan on ripping grass up.

    Shihab -

If power is your playing style, Predators would be a good match for you! I’m not sure what the UK price will be though. I think that your power will definitely get a boost if you get them!

    Joshua –

I’m glad to hear that you’ve had a good experience with the Predators!

    Thanks for the comments!

    Power: 9/10

The public seems to have problems at the feet blistered. Elders where I live here having a trust and always gives advice on wearing new shoes/cleat which bite both your shoes/cleat first before wearing it and say ‘before you bite me, I bite you down’ haha.. seems kind of crazy and impossible but actually really work with me, there was never a problem blistered feet…

  26. Andy May 15, 2011 at 4:33 pm #

Ryan, I’m not sure I understand. What do you do to the cleats before you wear them?

  27. ryan May 15, 2011 at 10:07 pm #

andy, just bite with your teeth around your cleat top heel or side lips where usually we got blistered, with saying ‘before you bite me cleat, I bite you down first..’ for us, if your cleat give blistered means you got bite from your cleat.. but andy, you must really and really believed on what you do this and believe it will working on you :)

Finally, xi of the “rule of law” “rule of man” against the stress, should be regarded as a new development of Confucian af down coat political thought. Huang for “There is a rule governing law and then people” believe that the Confucian tradition is almost subversive. However, he said, “law” and Legalism “law” not the same. Xi appears to be in the concrete of the Qin Legalist law is almost purely statutory provisions, it is only serving the interests of the emperor “illegal the law.” On the contrary, xi to establish the law is for the people to defend the world. As rightly pointed out by De Bary, xi first concern is to establish the “law of the foundation”, abercrombie and fitch it should be a “system of governance or the nature of the ruling regime rather than legal terms, it should represent the people’s interests, and consistent with the moral law “[11]. Since xi “Ming Yi Dai Fang Lu” and other theories, the late Qing reformists or revolutionaries, the two camps are proud to claim the yellow is the pioneer of Chinese democratic thinker. The formation of early political thought and political life by the impact of this work Liang (1873-1929), until an article in 1929, still think that xi’s greatness lies in his early Rousseau “The Social Contract On “several years ago (precisely should be a century earlier) wrote this great work [12]. In 1895, when the “Ming Yi Dai Fang Lu,” brought to light, the Sun Yat-sen once will include an excerpt of the first two sent to the Japanese friends. Some scholars to the fact that “Ming Yi Dai Fang Lu,” Sun Yat-sen’s republican revolution in China’s source of ideas [13]. Therefore, the “Ming Yi Dai Fang Lu,” winter clothes provides an illustrative case, specifically the 17th century to show us how the Confucian political thought in modern Chinese intellectual elite to accept and appreciate the values ??of Western democratic ideals and mentally prepared to do . Here I must declare, I do not agree with a previous view of this scholar: xi Locke with Russo ﹑ ﹑ Muller compared. I mean, xi really developed a new and interesting concept, this concept can best be interpreted as acceptance of the concept of Western democracy. If you admit that I made in the above “special theoretical sense of the concept” and “universal term” there is little distinction between the truth, then you can say, xi will be on the source of political authority, the people of the Confucian concept of cheap clothes the universal , the times can allow development to the ultimate, and Western democratic ideas in a theoretical sense is with a difference, but in the general sense is the same.
